Frequently Asked Questions 问答

Q:  What should I expect to feel during an acupuncture session?

A:  For the most part, patients feel calm and sleepy when the needles are in place.  Some report feeling either heavier or lighter and many fall asleep during treatment.

Q: Are the needles painful?

A:  It is normal to feel a slight pinch as the needles are tapped in.  Acupuncture needles are fine and flexible and no thicker than a strand of hair. If you experience any prolonged pinching, burning or sharpness, please let your practitioner know so that the placement of the needle can be adjusted.  A slight ache or heaviness near the needle placement is normal and indicative that the body is engaging productively.

Q:  Are acupuncture needles safe?

A:  Government regulations require acupuncturists to follow strict sterilization procedures.  Needles are never re-used, regardless of whether they are for the same patient.

Q: How soon will I see results?

A: For acute conditions, patients may experience results within a few sessions.  However, chronic problems may require 12 or more treatments for significant changes to settle in.  This question is best addressed during your first session.

Q: Is acupuncture appropriate for all ages?

A:  Because of the insertion of needles, acupuncture has been misunderstood as an adult-only treatment to the main stream. However, acupuncturists have long treated infants and children alike for conditions ranging from allergies, colds, fevers, coughs, ear infections, migraines, bedwetting, colic and even hyperactivity. On the other side of the spectrum, seniors can often experience relief from discomforts that are too often dismissed as signs of aging. Practical benefits from regular acupuncture treatments can include more independence, productivity and improved quality of life.
